About the Ford Explorer

Holding the distinction of being America’s best-selling SUV of all time, the legendary Ford Explorer is back to build on its award-winning reputation. Stronger, lighter, and leaner than its predecessor, the Explorer now boasts the most impressive model lineup in its iconic history. Balancing power with efficiency, EcoBoost® engine options, and groundbreaking tech features help you create lasting memories. Reimagined from the ground up, its rear-wheel drive architecture helps add even more capability to the Explorer. Drivers can relax and unwind inside its premium interior that’s loaded with extra space and innovative connectivity features. Ford Co-Pilot360™ Assist+ allows you to hit the highway with confidence by protecting you from the unexpected. Confident styling cues help you stand out in a sea of ordinary SUVs. Spanning from the capable Active to the luxurious Platinum, buyers will have virtually endless ways to find an Explorer that perfectly suits their needs.

What the Critics Say

"The switch back to traditional rear-wheel drive (all-wheel drive is optional) makes sense on many levels. Handling and overall balance improve dramatically when you stop trying to steer and power a vehicle from the same end. Towing stability and powertrain selection also benefit. Indeed, the Explorer is one of the better choices in the midsize three-row SUV class for towing." -- Edmunds

"Although certainly spacious and family friendly, the latest Explorer is for those who want their SUV to have guts. The standard 2.3-liter turbo engine pumps out more power and torque than its competitors' V6 engines, while bettering their fuel economy as well. The optional V6 engines, meanwhile, are turbocharged and obliterate everything else in the segment, topping out at 400 horsepower in the Explorer ST." -- Autoblog

What’s New for 2025

An extensive refresh for the 2025 model year brings several new and exciting updates to the popular Ford Explorer. The trim lineup has been reduced to four individual models. Visually, the 2025 Explorer receives a refreshed front fascia, new alloy wheel designs, new headlights and taillights, and select models can be optioned with a black-painted contrast roof. Changes to the interior are more significant and come in the form of new materials and upholstery color options. The 2025 Explorer is also the first Ford vehicle to debut the all-new Ford Digital Experience infotainment system. Finally, available BlueCruise hands-free highway driving is now available on the 2025 Ford Explorer.

Ford Explorer Features

Ford Explorer Performance

Inspired Performance

Designed to help you conquer any obstacle standing in your way, the Explorer rides on a rear-wheel drive platform that helps magnify both on- and off-road capabilities. The re-engineered 2.3-liter engine delivers 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, with increased performance over the outgoing Explorer equipped with the same engine. Serving as the foundation of the ST and Platinum powertrains, the optional 3.0L EcoBoost® V6 engine produces a muscular 400 horsepower. All Explorer models come paired with an advanced 10-speed automatic transmission. With the available 4WD with Terrain Management System™, the Explorer is ready for the road ahead. Standard trailer sway control selectively brakes and adjusts engine power to regulate trailer control, great for hauling your biggest toys along for your next weekend getaway.

Optional multicontour seats with Active Motion® offer greater comfort for the driver and front passenger. Featuring room for up to 7 passengers, the optional third-row PowerFold® seats make it easy to carry both passengers and cargo. The sleek exterior of the Explorer is not only eye-catching, but it also helps create additional rear-seat headroom for one of the most spacious cabins in its class. An available 980-watt 14-speaker B&O premium audio system is sure to be a hit with music fans of all ages.
